Acne (acne vulgaris or cystic acne) is a rather common human disease of the skin and is characterized by areas of skin with seborrhea (scaly red skin), comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), papules (pinheads), pustules (pimples), nodules (large papules) and possibly acne scars. Acne affects mostly skin with the densest population of sebaceous follicles; these areas which include the face, the upper chest and the back. Severe acne is inflammatory, but acne can also manifest in noninflammatory forms. The lesions are caused by changes in pilosebaceous units, skin structures consisting of a hair follicle and its associated sebaceous gland, changes which require androgen stimulation.
Acne is most common during adolescence and does sometimes continue into adulthood. During adolescence acne is commonly caused by an increase in testosterone regardless of sex. Most sufferers are fortunate in that acne disappears over time and is normally over by the age 25. Some people are unfortunate and suffer with acne well in to their forties
Aside from acne scarring, the main effects of acne are psychological. Many acne suffers experience a lack of self-esteem and in very extreme cases depression or suicide may occur.
Acne scars can be unsightly and eliminating them can be a life-changing experience. Fortunately Cosmetic Clinic Laser Services division has the technology to help patients. The procedure we use is the UltraPulse Fractional Laser Treatments/ TotalFX to treat acne scars. This procedure is applied in two steps. First your physician will use a topical anesthetic to numb your skin which will aid in treatment comfort. The DeepFX laser is applied first and this is then followed by the ActiveFB laser. Treatment time lasts for approximately 30 minutes but total treatment time varies depending on the area being treated.
During treatment you will feel a warm sensation as the laser is applied. Immediately after treatment your skin will be warm and it will look as if you have been sunburned. Our physician will give you a skin care regimen to be used for the days following treatment.
As your skin heals you will begin to notice an improvement in wrinkles, fine lines, scars, pigmentation, tone and texture. Improvement will continue for up to 6 months following the procedures and the final results are long lasting.
