When are Nose Jobs for Teens Acceptable?

Any cosmetic surgery for teens is a contentious topic. Nose jobs for teens are no exception.  In today’s image obsessed society, having a less than perfect nose can cause all kinds of self-confidence issues, as well as teasing for teenagers. All in all this can result in deep emotional scarring for teens. Does this then make nose jobs for teens acceptable?

A nose job, officially called rhinoplasty, is the surgical procedure performed to reshape an individual’s nose. Some of the types of rhinoplasty include;

  • Opening breathing passages
  • Decreasing or increasing the size of nostrils
  • Straightening the bridge of the nose
  • Making the nose smaller or bigger
  • Reshaping the tip of the nose
  • Removing a hump on the nose
  • Correcting the nose after an injury

As can be seen from this list, nose jobs for teens can be done for either medical or aesthetic reasons.  A nose job can range from being a very simple procedure to a complex one, depending on the purpose of the operation. Normally, a nose job is an outpatient procedure performed under general anaesthetic.

Ethically, it is important that the decision to have a nose job, is the patient’s and not the parent’s or any other party. Moreover, it is imperative with nose jobs for teens, that the individual’s face is fully developed. Before having rhinoplasty, the teenager should have a certain level of emotional maturity and realistic expectations for the surgery’s outcome. The patient also needs to be committed to the pre and post-operative guidelines given by their surgeon, before going through with a nose job.

Although nose jobs for teens can help give the teen more self-confidence, it can also damage the teen’s self-worth. Allowing a teen to have the surgery for aesthetic reasons, communicates that they were inadequate without the procedure. This can in tern make them even more self-conscious than before.

At What Age are Nose Jobs for Teens Advised?

Many teens may be adamant that rhinoplasty is something that they truly want and feel will help improve their self-confidence. In which case, if having the procedure at such a young age has been carefully thought through, it is important that nose jobs for teens are performed at the right time in their facial development.

It is important to take into account that with the teenage years come multiple physical changes. Moreover, the proportion of a person’s face will continue to change after adolescence. This is important to consider when thinking about nose jobs for teens, as their face will change. As such, it is vital to take into account the timing of having a nose job. Nose jobs for teens can potentially disturb the development of the face, if performed prematurely. On average, most girls can safely have rhinoplasty from about sixteen or seventeen years old, while boys can have a nose job approximately a year later.

However, this is entirely dependant on when the nose has reached its adult size, which only a consultation with an experienced plastic surgeon will be able to determine.

Before allowing a teen to have a nose job, it is important to take into account the possible psychological side effects as well as benefits, together with the physical risks involved with the procedure.  Deciding on when nose jobs for teens are acceptable is not something that should be taken lightly.

It is important that the teen fully understands the procedure and what will be expected of them prior and post-surgery before going ahead with it. Moreover, the teen’s reasons for having the surgery and their emotional maturity will influence whether it is an acceptable procedure to have, or not, depending on the case.
